Heat Pressing Instructions
DTF Application Guide • Mabuhay Designs
Complete guide to applying DTF transfers with a heat press. Temperature settings, pressure tips, fabric-specific instructions, and troubleshooting for perfect results every time.
Pressing by Fabric Type
Settings vary by material - use the right ones

100% Cotton
The most common fabric for custom shirts. Cotton takes DTF transfers beautifully with the standard settings.
- ✓ Temperature: 300°F (150°C)
- ✓ Time: 15 seconds
- ✓ Pressure: Medium-firm, warm peel

Polyester & Blends
Lower temperature prevents scorching and sublimation dye migration. Slightly shorter press time.
- ✓ Temperature: 285°F (140°C)
- ✓ Time: 12 seconds
- ✓ Pressure: Medium, warm peel

Nylon & Performance
Heat-sensitive fabrics need gentler treatment. Always test on a seam or inside area first.
- ✓ Temperature: 270°F (132°C)
- ✓ Time: 10 seconds
- ✓ Pressure: Light-medium, test first

Hoodies & Thick Fabrics
Thicker fabrics need more heat penetration. Slightly longer press time and firmer pressure.
- ✓ Temperature: 305°F (152°C)
- ✓ Time: 18 seconds
- ✓ Pressure: Firm, warm peel
Step-by-Step Pressing
Follow these steps for perfect results
Pre-Press
Pre-press the garment for 5 seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles. This ensures even adhesion.
Position
Place the DTF transfer face-down on the garment. Align carefully before pressing.
Press
Apply heat at the correct temperature and time for your fabric type. Use even, firm pressure.
Peel & Finish
Warm peel the carrier film. Cover with parchment paper and press 5 more seconds to seal.
Why Choose Mabuhay Designs
Perfect Temperature
Every degree matters. Use a thermometer to verify your press is accurate. Most issues come from wrong temperature.
Timing Is Critical
Too short and the transfer will not stick. Too long and you risk scorching. Use a timer every time.
Pressure Matters
Even, firm pressure across the entire design. If using a clam press, ensure it is level.
Warm Peel
Do not hot peel or cold peel. Warm peel (wait 3-5 seconds after opening press) gives the cleanest results.

Common Questions
What temperature should I use for DTF transfers?
Standard is 300°F (150°C) for cotton. Lower for polyester (285°F) and nylon (270°F). Higher for thick fabrics like hoodies (305°F). Always verify with a thermometer.
Can I use a home iron instead of a heat press?
We strongly recommend a heat press. Home irons do not provide consistent temperature or pressure. If you must use an iron, use highest cotton setting, press very firmly for 30+ seconds on a hard flat surface.
Why is my transfer not sticking?
Most common causes: temperature too low, not enough pressure, or moisture in the garment. Pre-press for 5 seconds, increase pressure, and add 3 seconds to press time.
Should I hot peel or cold peel?
Warm peel. Wait 3-5 seconds after opening the press, then peel the carrier film. This gives the cleanest edge and best adhesion.
Do I need to do a second press?
Yes. After peeling, cover with parchment paper and press for 5 more seconds. This final press seals the edges and improves wash durability.
